Decadent Chocolate Bark

Thin, snappy chocolate with your choice of toppings and spices. No baking required. Completely customizable. Ready in 30 minutes.

Why we made this

The easiest fancy chocolate you'll ever make

Chocolate bark is deceptively simple. One bar of real chocolate, melted and spread thin, topped with whatever you choose, then frozen until it snaps. No skill required. No special equipment needed. The result looks and tastes like it came from a gourmet chocolatier.

What makes homemade bark special is the quality of the base chocolate. When you use an Elements bar, you're starting with real cacao, real ingredients, no additives. Whatever toppings you choose become secondary flavors that complement, not overpower. A sprinkle of fleur de sel. Some rose petals. Toasted nuts. Cacao nibs. The combinations are endless.

This is a recipe for experimentation. Make it once with the suggested toppings, then make it again with whatever speaks to you. It's impossible to go wrong.

How to make it

Step by step

1Melt the chocolate. Break 1 bar of Elements chocolate into pieces. Set up a double boiler (or a heatproof bowl over simmering water). Place chocolate in the bowl and melt slowly, stirring occasionally, until completely smooth and glossy.
2Cool slightly. Remove from heat and let the melted chocolate cool for about 5 minutes. This helps it set faster and gives it a nice shine.
3Spread thin. Pour the melted chocolate onto a silicone mat or parchment paper lined baking sheet. Using an offset spatula or the back of a spoon, spread the chocolate into a very thin, even layer (approximately 1/4 inch thick). Thinner bark snaps more satisfyingly.
4Add toppings and spices. While the chocolate is still warm, immediately sprinkle your chosen toppings and spices over the surface. Work quickly before the chocolate begins to set. Be generous but not overwhelming. You want flavor complementing the chocolate, not drowning it.
5Freeze. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for 20 minutes. The chocolate should be completely set and snap cleanly when broken.
6Break and enjoy. Remove from the freezer and break the bark into shards or pieces using your hands. Serve immediately or store for later.
Why this works

The art of balance

Real chocolate as the base is everything. When you use an Elements bar, you're starting with quality. The chocolate won't be waxy or thin-tasting. It will have depth, richness, and body. Whatever toppings you add will be a complement, not a cover-up.

Thin spreading creates the signature bark texture. A thick chocolate coating becomes clunky. Thin chocolate creates snap and elegance. The toppings are meant to be scattered on top, not buried in chocolate.

Toppings while warm means they'll stick. If you wait until the chocolate has hardened, toppings won't adhere. Working quickly and decisively ensures they're distributed and set.

The freeze sets everything in a clean snap. Room temperature chocolate becomes soft and loses its structure. Frozen chocolate becomes brittle in the best way.

Why this tastes expensive
Because you're using quality chocolate and treating it with intention. There are no shortcuts, no additives, no artificial anything. You're literally making what professional chocolatiers make, just at home. The simplicity is the sophistication.

Before you make it

Tips for perfect bark

  • Use a double boiler for melting. Direct heat on the chocolate will burn it and make it grainy and unusable.
  • Spread the chocolate immediately after melting, before it cools too much and becomes difficult to work with.
  • The thinner you spread, the more satisfying the snap when you break it. Aim for 1/4 inch or less.
  • Don't overthink topping placement. A scattered, organic look is more beautiful than a perfectly organized one.
  • Work quickly when adding toppings. Once chocolate begins to set, toppings won't stick.
  • The freezer is your friend. 20 minutes creates the perfect set. Don't leave it longer or the chocolate becomes too brittle.
  • Break with your hands rather than with a knife. You'll get more interesting shards.
  • Store in an airtight container. Room temperature will soften it.
Keep and store

Storage options

Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. The cold keeps the chocolate snappy and prevents softening.

Freezer: Layer bark pieces between parchment paper and freeze in an airtight container for up to 1 month.

Room temperature: Not recommended. Chocolate will soften and lose its snap. Always store cool.

Why Elements bars are perfect for bark

The beauty of bark is that you can use any Elements bar. Sea Salt for a savory-sweet combination. Orange Crunch for brightness. Rose for floral elegance. Each bar's unique flavor becomes the foundation, and your toppings build on that foundation.

Because Elements bars are made with real ingredients and no additives, they create a clean, pure chocolate flavor. There's nothing competing with your toppings. The chocolate is a vehicle for the flavors you choose to layer on top.

Recipe notes: Makes 8-12 pieces depending on size and how you break the bark. Completely vegan if using plant-based Elements bars. Dairy-free, gluten-free, and soy-free. Best stored in the refrigerator or freezer. Do not store at room temperature as chocolate will soften. Bark can be made up to 2 weeks ahead and stored in an airtight container in the fridge. The beauty of bark is in customization, so don't be afraid to experiment with toppings and spices until you find your favorite combination.
