Ojas Chocolate Truffles

Vitality in every bite. Energy balls infused with Ayurvedic superfoods and coated in Elements Sea Salt chocolate. No baking required.

Why we made this

Building ojas, one truffle at a time

In Ayurveda, "ojas" is the vital energy that flows through your body. It's what makes you resilient, glowing, and truly alive. Building ojas requires real food, superfoods, and ingredients that support your deepest vitality.

These truffles are built around this concept. Dates provide grounding sweetness. Almonds and pumpkin seeds deliver nourishment and vitality. Black sesame seeds strengthen bones and improve circulation. Cardamom, ginger, and black pepper warm your digestive fire and help you absorb nutrients. Orange rind brings brightness. And the Elements Sea Salt chocolate? It anchors everything in pure, functional chocolate.

These aren't candy. They're medicine disguised as indulgence. You eat one and feel the difference — not a sugar crash, but sustained energy and a subtle sense of wellbeing.

The Ayurvedic concept

What is ojas and why it matters

Ojas (also spelled "oja" or "ojahas") is a Sanskrit term that translates loosely to "vitality," "vigor," or "life force energy." In Ayurveda, ojas is the subtle essence of all tissues in your body. It's what gives you immunity, glow, resilience, and the ability to handle stress.

When your ojas is strong, you feel grounded, energized, and genuinely well. When ojas depletes (from poor diet, stress, or inadequate sleep), you feel exhausted, dull, and vulnerable to illness. Building ojas is the foundation of Ayurvedic health.

These truffles are designed to build ojas. Every ingredient is chosen for its ojas-building properties. The soaking (which we discuss below) increases digestibility and nutrient absorption. The spices support your agni (digestive fire). The superfoods nourish on the deepest level.

Ojas-building foods —
According to Ayurveda, foods that build ojas are: whole foods, warming spices, ghee and healthy oils, dates and raisins, nuts and seeds, and foods that are easy to digest. These truffles check every box.
What you need

Ingredients

The base (soaked)
  • Joolies Organic Medjool dates (soaked 1 hour): 1 cup
  • Raw almonds (soaked 1 hour): 1/2 cup
The superfoods (lightly toasted)
  • Pumpkin seeds (pepitas), lightly toasted: 1/2 cup
  • Black sesame seeds, lightly toasted: 1 tbsp
The spices and flavoring
  • Fresh orange rind (zest): 1 tbsp
  • Ground cardamom: 1 tsp
  • Ground ginger root powder: 1/2 tsp
  • Ground black pepper: 1/2 tsp
The coating
  • Elements Sea Salt chocolate bar: 1 bar
How to make it

Step by step

1Grind seeds. Add lightly toasted pumpkin seeds and black sesame seeds to a food processor or high-powered grinder. Grind until broken down but not completely smooth — you want some texture.
2Grind nuts and dates. Drain soaked almonds and dates. Add to the grinder with the seed mixture. Grind together until the mixture is broken down but still slightly chunky. The mixture should hold together when squeezed but not be completely smooth.
3Mix in spices. Transfer the ground mixture to a bowl. Add orange rind, cardamom, ginger powder, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly. The mixture should be fragrant and well combined.
4Roll into balls. Using your hands or a small scoop, form the mixture into balls about the size of a large marble (roughly 1 inch in diameter). This should yield 12-15 truffles.
5Freeze briefly. Place the balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for 15 minutes. The cold firms them up so they don't fall apart when dipped in warm chocolate.
6Melt chocolate. While balls freeze, set up a double boiler (or a bowl over simmering water). Break the Elements Sea Salt bar into pieces and melt slowly, stirring occasionally. Once melted, let cool slightly — you want it warm but not so hot it's smoking.
7Dip and cool. Remove balls from freezer. Working quickly, use a fork or dipping tool to dip each ball into melted chocolate, coating completely. Let excess chocolate drip off, then place on a metal cooling rack. Let set at room temperature (or place in freezer for 10 minutes if in a hurry).
The science of ojas

Why each ingredient matters

Soaked dates and almonds are more digestible. Soaking removes antinutrients that can block nutrient absorption. Soaked dates and almonds are easier for your system to break down and assimilate. This is ancient Ayurvedic wisdom that modern science confirms.

Pumpkin seeds strengthen and ground. They're rich in minerals (magnesium, zinc, iron) that build ojas. They're warming and grounding — exactly what your body needs for vitality.

Black sesame seeds are powerful medicine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, black sesame seeds strengthen bones, improve circulation, and support kidney health. They're distinctly more powerful than white sesame.

The spices warm your digestive fire. Cardamom aids digestion and oxygenates the blood. Ginger stimulates agni (digestive fire), allowing you to properly assimilate nutrients. Black pepper enhances absorption of all other compounds. Together, they ensure your body actually absorbs the nutrition from this food.

Orange rind brings brightness and vitamin C. Fresh citrus adds brightness without the acidity of juice. Vitamin C supports immunity — a key component of ojas.

Elements Sea Salt chocolate completes the picture. It adds nourishment through cacao, sea salt that supports mineral balance, and turmeric that's anti-inflammatory. The chocolate coating also makes these truffles genuinely enjoyable to eat.

Why soaking matters —
Nuts and seeds contain phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors that block nutrient absorption. Soaking for just an hour neutralizes these compounds and activates beneficial enzymes. The difference in how your body feels is real and measurable. Never skip this step.
Make them your own

Three ways to customize these truffles

  • More spiced: Add 1/4 tsp additional cardamom and 1/4 tsp cinnamon. Creates warmer, more aromatic truffles ideal for cold months.
  • Extra nutty: Replace half the pumpkin seeds with sunflower seeds or add 1/4 cup additional almonds. Creates richer, more substantial truffles.
  • Elements coated variation: Use Elements Rose Cardamom chocolate or Elements Orange Crunch bar instead of Sea Salt for different flavor profiles.
Before you dip

Tips for perfect truffles

  • Don't skip soaking almonds and dates. It takes one hour but makes the difference between digestible food and food that sits heavy in your stomach.
  • Lightly toasting seeds improves flavor and makes them easier to grind. Toast in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Don't ovegrind the mixture. You want some texture — it shouldn't be paste-like. A food processor is better than a high-speed blender for this.
  • Form balls with slightly damp hands. If the mixture is sticky, refrigerate for 10 minutes before rolling.
  • The 15-minute freeze is crucial. Cold balls don't fall apart when dipped in warm chocolate.
  • Chocolate shouldn't be too hot. If it's smoking, it's too hot. Let it cool slightly before dipping.
  • Use a fork for dipping. Roll the ball slowly, tap off excess chocolate, and gently place on the cooling rack.
  • Fresh orange rind is essential. It should smell fragrant. Zest the day of making for maximum aroma.
How to enjoy

Serving, storage, and benefits

As a morning boost: Eat one truffle with warm water or milk to start your day with grounded energy.

As an afternoon pick-me-up: One truffle around 3pm sustains energy without the crash of processed snacks.

As an evening ritual: One truffle with herbal tea creates a gentle wind-down that supports sleep.

Refrigerated: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. The chocolate coating protects the interior.

Frozen: Layer with parchment between truffles and freeze for up to 1 month. You can eat them straight from the freezer for a colder, slower-melting treat.

Room temperature: These are best eaten slightly cool (straight from the fridge) but perfectly fine at room temperature.

The chocolate

Why Elements Sea Salt bar is perfect for these truffles

The Elements Sea Salt bar contains 70% dark chocolate with sea salt and turmeric. When melted and used as a coating for these ojas truffles, it adds mineral support (from sea salt), anti-inflammatory properties (from turmeric), and the antioxidant richness of real cacao.

The turmeric in the chocolate complements the warming spices in the truffles. The sea salt brings out the earthiness of the seeds and nuts. Together, the coating and filling create something more powerful than either alone.

This is why Elements products work in recipes beyond what's explicitly called for. They're not just chocolate. They're functional food designed to support your deepest health.
